FAQs 2018-01-19T16:05:42+00:00

What do I need to know?

All information you need to participate in the conference will be provided to you as you go — right from ticket registration to our closing ceremony. With that said, we’ll also be updating this page with commonly asked questions, so you can access everything from one central location. If you have any further questions, please contact us at secgen@brismun18.com.

Can I help behind-the-scenes to gain experience? 2018-01-15T18:50:38+00:00

Yes! BrisMUN ’18 will be running a Volunteer program this year, where interested university students can help out with tasks during the conference. Applications for the Volunteer program will open in early March, 2018.

Can I refund my ticket at a later date? 2018-01-15T18:55:01+00:00

Our refund policy can be found in the Terms and Conditions. Because delegates need significant time before a conference to research their topic, and BrisMUN needs to confirm numbers for venue hire quite early, the amount you may get refunded will reduce as the conference approaches. Tickets may not be refunded after March 18th, 2018.

Can I still attend even if I’ve never been to a Model UN event before? 2018-01-15T18:39:16+00:00

Absolutely! BrisMUN ’18 will be running brand new Model UN training and workshops for all experience levels, both before and during the conference. Our conference is a unique opportunity to actively expand your skills in negotiation, UN Resolution writing, public speaking, and more, so we particularly encourage first-time participants.

How can I access the internet during the conference? 2018-01-19T15:48:57+00:00

QUT will be providing us with complimentary visitor wi-fi (details will be released later), but it should also be possible to log in with Eduroam. You may wish to write down your university’s instructions for Eduroam connection as a backup option.

How do I select my committee and position? 2018-01-30T23:41:36+00:00

After you have purchased your Participant ticket, you will be linked to our application form. (You may also receive the link in an email confirming your purchase.) In that form, you will be asked to list a number of committee and position preferences. (Available positions can be found here.) Once you have been assigned a position, which will happen shortly after the end of each registration round, it will be emailed to the email address you listed in the application form.

If you have paid for a ticket and submitted an application form, but have not received a position within 7 days of the closing date of the registration round you applied in, please contact us at secgen@brismun18.com so we can check the status of your allocation.

How does the position allocation process work? 2018-01-21T09:56:54+00:00

In certain committees, there may be particular countries or positions that must be filled by an experienced delegate for the committee to function well. (Usually only a handful, if any!) In those few cases, the Secretariat will select the most meritorious applicant for the position, taking into account both past Model UN experience and their responses to the questions on the application form.

Otherwise, the vast majority of positions will be allocated so that as many people as possible get at least one of their preferences. Beyond that criteria, we attempt to give people as high a preference as possible. We strongly recommend considering all of your preferences carefully, not just your #1, so that we can give you a position you will love! Participants who make it difficult to allocate them a position (e.g. by repeating a single preference over and over again, or only preferencing highly popular countries) may miss out on being given a preference, if that has to occur.

How much does it cost to attend? 2018-01-15T18:49:46+00:00

The base registration fee is $140 for a delegate position. Early bird registrations (during Priority 1 registration) receive a $10 discount, and inter-state or international delegates can receive an additional $20 discount.

How should I get around the city? 2018-01-19T15:38:27+00:00

If you are staying within 2km of the QUT campus (even across the river), it is most likely viable to walk to the conference, given the availability of side walks and pedestrian bridges.

For longer trips, you will likely want to compare public transport options against Uber fares. If you will be using public transport regularly, it is worth buying a Go Card for convenience.

We would strongly recommend planning your transport home before heading to our social events.

How should I get from Brisbane Airport to the city? 2018-01-19T16:09:42+00:00

If you are travelling with two or more others, you may wish to share an Uber, which will cost between $34-$43 one-way (according to their fare estimator).

Alternatively, BrisMUN has secured a discount from Airtrain, who will provide return tickets from just $30 each (i.e. $15pp one-way). Once you arrive at Central Station, you can then board a free city loop bus that will take you to QUT (or various other hotspots in the CBD). To obtain the discount code, please contact us at secgen@brismun18.com.

How should I prepare for my committee? 2018-01-19T15:42:13+00:00

BrisMUN ’18 will be more valuable the more you put into it. The major starting point for research will be your Committee’s Briefing Paper, which will be made available to you well before the event. While it will serve as a very useful preparation guide, we would highly recommend researching beyond this. Preparing a thorough understanding of your position, as well as brainstorming creative solutions beforehand, will greatly help you in your MUN experience. More details will be provided by your Committee Directors in the lead up to the conference.
